Manager : Linda Kennard
Coaches : Vicki Loveday and Christine Tomlinson ************************************************* *************************************************
The Nighthawks' hopes of re-entering the league were dealt a blow in the summer of 07 as the EIHA announced a change in age restrictions. The Romford management and coaches had spent the last 18 months recruiting mostly juniors to play in the newly formed team only to find that girls aged under 16 would not be eligible to play. However, we are not giving up hope, just restructuring our approach. It seems we will need to recruit enough players for not one but TWO teams, one under 16 and one over 16. No experience is needed so if you're interested please contact us or if you are 14 or under, book yourself onto the beginners course on a Wednesday evening. This is a very popular course and there's currently a waiting list so we advise you to act sooner rather than later! *************************************************
The Club is lucky to have Ellie Ranson within the junior programme who has been selected for the South of England Under 16's Girls Conference Team and also the England Under 16 Girls' School of Excellence. WELL DONE to her from all at RJIHC! *************************************************
BRIEF HISTORY:
The first women's team - the Romford Renegades - was formed in the late
1980s and competed in the Capital Division in the 1988/89
season, finishing fifth. It appears that they only lasted
one or possibly two years before folding - legend has it because
of a rather dodgy duo helping themselves to team funds and the shirts!!
Interestingly the only female Romford player who has represented Great Britain in ice hockey competition is Lynn Philpott who played in the GB -v- Holland match @ Chelmsford on 6 March 1989. Unfortunately GB lost 4-2. Click >here< for details and scroll to bottom of page. The second women's team, the Romford Nighthawks arrived thanks to the hard work of Sally Taylor (since founded and now coaching Streatham Storm and Southern England Women) and the late Ruth Poppe. The team entered the league in 1994/95 and finished a respectable fourth. |
