South East Conference Under 11's win Gold in Turku, Finland - 20th-22nd March 2008 by Peter Billing

The South East Conference Under 11 ice hockey team won the gold medal in the 24th Turku International tournament in Finland over the Easter weekend.

The team was led by Romford Junior Ice Hockey Club Head Coach, Ben Pitchley and included Romford Raptors players, Charlie Phillips (Captain), Glenn Billing (Assistant Captain), Sonny Phillips (Netminder), Dayna Bell-Blake, Sam Flight and Jake Sylvester together with players from Chelmsford, Peterborough, Slough and Streatham.

The tournament was contested by ten teams split into two groups of five with the winners of each group meeting in the final.

South East started the tournament in dramatic style with an 8-0 demolition of Turku-based, TuK-V on Thursday evening in the Varissuo rink which is housed in a former nuclear bunker, 16 metres underground!

South East’s next two games were on Good Friday at the new wood construction temporary rink at Raisio.  They started with a 3-0 victory over another Finnish side, Salamat Ukk and followed this with a superb 4-0 defeat of EVU 3 who were unbeaten before the game.

The final games were played in the 11,820 seat Turkuhalli which is normally the home of Finnish SMLiga team, TPS Turku.  South East were not put off by the impressive surroundings and skated to a 4-1 win over LokV Kelt on Saturday morning to set up a gold medal game with the winners of Group B.

The final against EPS White was a tense affair with neither team giving anything away.  South East finally found a way past EPS’s tight defence with 5 minutes remaining and then it was South East’s turn to defend with their lives until the final buzzer came with South East victorious 1-0.

The whole team should be congratulated for their hard work and determination to be the first South East Conference team to win in Turku for 12 years!
